Heather Honey – Calluna vulgaris
Our Heather Honey is harvested from hives placed in the heart of Glen Esk, surrounded by the unspoiled heather moors and meadows near the Glen Esk Folk Museum. This unique landscape, rich in wild flora, gives our honey its distinctive aroma, amber colour, and robust character.
We extract it using a traditional press method, which preserves all the natural enzymes, pollen, propolis, and micronutrients found in the honeycomb. This ensures that every jar retains the full spectrum of healthful elements just as nature intended.
Heather honey has long been appreciated both as a gourmet delight and for its scientifically recognised properties. Naturally rich in antioxidants and phenolic compounds, it contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. It is also known for its high levels of glucose oxidase, an enzyme that supports natural antibacterial activity. Its thixotropic texture (gel-like consistency that becomes fluid when stirred) is a hallmark of genuine heather honey, reflecting its purity and unique floral source.
Enjoy it as a natural sweetener, paired with cheeses, drizzled over yogurt, or simply savoured by the spoonful. More than a honey, it is a local product deeply tied to Scottish tradition and landscape, carrying with it the essence of our moorlands in every drop.
